Rub Shoulders with Pro Kiteboarders in Cape Town
With its perfect kiting conditions during its windy summer, Cape Town has become a favourite destination for many international kiteboarding, kitesurfing and windsurfing professionals. Not only do many kiting pros spend months here to train, they also come to the west coast to take part in world-class kiting events.
Don’t be surprised if you see the likes of Ruben Lenten, Aaron Hadlow, Youri Zoon and Kevin Langeree flying though the air and performing mega loops, and an array of tricks at Kite Beach or Big Bay.
Kite Competitions
Big Bay has been the chosen venue for two top kiting events held recently:
- The LEN10 Megaloop Challenge in 2012
- The Redbull King of the Air Competition in 2013
The Redbull King of the Air event attracted pro kiteboarders from far and wide, and had some of the world’s top kiteboarders competing for the prestigious title.
Jesse Richman from the USA eventually was crowned King of the Air, followed closely by Nick Jacobsen from Denmark who took second place, with Sam Light from the UK in third position and PKRA world champion, Youri Zoon in the fourth spot.
Robby Naish who attended the event, commented that, “This was the best exhibition of high performance kitesurfing I’ve ever seen. Big Bay was the perfect venue for this event. If this place wasn’t on the map before today, it’s definitely going to be from now on. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many people at a kiteboarding event.”
